Hanex is a global brand that is manufactured by Hyundai L&C. Hanex UK are the UK distributor of Hanex working with fabricators, architects, and interior designers. Hyundai L&C has been offering Hanex premium acrylic solid surfaces since 1995.
What is Hanex Solid Surface Made From?
Hanex is an acrylic solid surface material that is a composite of ⅔ Aluminum TriHydroxide (ATH) and ⅓ Acrylic Monomer Polymethyl and Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA/MMA), plus natural pigments for colour and aesthetic variations.
ATH is the main base of solid surface materials which is refined to a fine powder from Bauxite, one of the most abundant minerals on the earth. This powder is then bound together with PMMA/MMA resins during the polymerisation process.
Subtle differences in the chemical composition of different brands can have an impact on the end product performance including the sheet hardness, durability or thermoforming capabilities.
There are 3 types of solid surfaces, acrylic-based, acrylic/polyester blends and polyester-based:
- Acrylic based (such as Hanex) is 100% acrylic and has the best UV resistance, is colour fast and is thermoformable.
- The Acrylic/Polyester blend has a poor UV resistance and limited thermoformability.
- Polyester based solid surfaces have poor UV resistance and are not thermoformable.
UV Resistance – As one of the main features of solid surfaces is the variety of colour options, UV Resistance is important so that the colour doesn’t change over time due to sunlight exposure.
Thermoformable – Ability to be shaped using heat and pressure. Thermoforming is a manufacturing process of shaping acrylic sheets using a mould and heat.
Why Choose Hanex as a Material Over Natural Stone?
Due to solid surfaces being man-made, the colours, patterns and textures can be recreated for repair, refurbishment, or extension of any area, offering consistency throughout. As stone is naturally occurring, the patterns and colours cannot be replicated should you need replacement sections.
When covering a large area, natural stone will have visible seams where patterns can’t be matched up due to the variety in their designs. Solid Surfaces offer a seamless design for a beautiful finish.
There are certain costs associated with luxury natural stones such as Marble and Granite but Hanex offers a cheaper alternative that is long-lasting. If you’d rather have a natural stone aesthetic, there are a range of solid surface materials available that mimic the natural beauty of stone with all of the benefits of solid surfaces!
Natural stone typically needs sealing due to being porous, however solid surfaces are non-porous so are simple to maintain compared with stone. Due to their non-porous properties, they are also hygienic and easy to clean.
Solid surface slabs sheets can also be fabricated into various sizes, thicknesses and shapes depending on the project, this versatility means solid surfaces can be used for a wide range of applications including:
- Kitchen worktops and seamless moulded sinks
- Bathrooms
- Shop counters and displays
- Flooring
- Cladding
- Splashbacks
There is an option for anyone and any project within our range, explore the wide range of Hanex Solid Surface colours to request a sample or find an installer to bring your project to life.
